Legislative proposals that will erode Florida’s strong building code are in play (SB 860, SB 7000, HB 901), and they are forcing us to remember that the horrific devastation caused by Hurricane Andrew was worsened by inadequate codes and lax enforcement.
Andrew struck 25 years ago. The devastation it left was surreal, unrecognizable even to longtime residents. Trees were bent from the wind, homes flattened, street signs and traffic signals missing.
